i feel like the definition of self-hosting is quite blurry
does hosting stuff on a VPS count as a self-hosting?

@rain I think the distinction should be less dependent on the hardware you use or its location, but mostly on the purpose of the things you host, since the idea behind it (at least to me) is to gain independence from the big players of the internet who could hold you and your media/digital existence hostage.

That being said, hosting your stuff on some aws webspace would less "self-hosted" than hosting on some smaller provider, which ofc would be less self-hosted than hosting on your own server rack (which is a tradeoff, bc you basically swap "being dependant on your VPS provider" with being dependant on the goodwill of your ISP, who might want to punish you for using a private contract for "business purposes"... or what they might deem as a "business purpose").

@rain This is maybe not the kind of answer with sharp boundaries between "Yes" and "No" you might want, but I think this acknowledges the real interdependencies and obligations you have with friends/family, business partners or your own community in a helpful way. It also allows for asking what you want to bring to the table by doing that.
There is not the one right way to self-host, but a bunch of decisions that leads you closer or farther away from the goal you set for yourself.
