hello, everyone, hope you having a great one
yesterday i announced this announcement and time has finally came for me to make the announced announcement
meowing.men will be closing it's doors on November 3rd 2026
there are a few reasons i decided to take this decision:
first of all, i can't sustain keeping up Wafrn, especially with the Bluesky integration on, and especially with this many users on it, my homelab simply isn't ready for the behemoth that is Wafrn (/pos) and i was quite slow to realize that. it is quite taxing on the hardware, so usually (at least when i was posting more actively here), it (mostly the Bluesky portion of it) consumes 30-40% of 8 CPU cores, 4-5 GiB of RAM and also quite quickly kills my SSD, with it gaining one percent of wearout every 2-7 days
i don't want to migrate to a Ukrainian VPS because these are quite expensive, and they are about to become either even more expensive or just unreliable option seeing that the Ukrainian data centers are now a target of Russian airstrikes
i don't want to migrate to an European VPS because the point of migrating here to Ukraine was protecting myself from fucked up digital laws they are coming up in there such as Chat Control, EU Kids Act and whatnot (currently Ukraine is one of the few countries that doesn't have any sort of laws like that even conceived), and also so that i could have more control on, well, my services, lol
i don't want to beg you all for money for me to expand my homelab so that it could keep Wafrn floating because there are people who are way more in need than me (and also because i absolutely hate asking for money, it makes me feel miserable)
second of all, and this is a too crucial one for me, it's just simply too stressful for me to maintain and mod a quite a huge community of users (50 active users is quite a lot for me :/), and i get very sad and very stressed out when any technical issues arise, or when i see any signals that they might arise, i just don't want to screw you all over
if you are a meowing.men user, you will receive the same announcement on the email, but it will also include an invite code which will allow you to register on the flagship Wafrn without having to wait for approval (you can also look at https://join.wafrn.net for any other open Wafrn instances if you so desire, but my recommendation would be the flagship one anyway since it gets new features quicker!)
you can also join the Wafrn Matrix, IRC or Discord communities (they are listed on https://wafrn.net)) if you need any help with migration
and, of course, you can also migrate to any other Fediverse instance as well
thank you for using my Wafrn, it was quite fun hosting it, and thanks to the Wafrn community for great hospitality, i'm enjoying being the part of it (and maybe i'll still contribute to it a bit)
singing off, @link (now at @rain if you're wondering)
