i feel like i'm trying way too hard to make my home lab sustainable to outages as much as possible than i need to
like, i'm unironically considering buying an LTE (we got only LTE here) modem as a fail-over WAN for my home lab, but like, would 70 Mbit/s for twice the price of a gigabit internet really benefit me? i feel like my stuff will saturate this very quickly
i guess that better than not having internet connection but still :/

@rain I feel this. I got extremely lucky in that our landlords forced another Internet connection on us with a different ISP using different infra, and thankfully not charging any extra rent for it.

I immediately bridged the modem and set it as a failover connection on my router. Just need a second UPS so I can have things last longer than 10 minutes on battery.

@maddy i don't think we really have any other ISP in our house, so yeah
i was thinking about UPS for a while, and in the end i went for a portable power station with USB-B connectivity instead of a UPS (and also we have a separate UPS for the main router)
while i still had to turn off one of the three servers for this to bring down power consumption from ~110 w to ~60 w, it helped my services survive a ~3 hour outage today, and it still had 25% charge left

@jcm @maddy i have 3 servers mostly to split different OSes and purposes between them, because visualizing the first two OSes i'm about to list on a single Proxmox box, even with PCIe passthrough, did cause me some headache
i have a custom-built mini-server acting as a OPNsense router, i have a HP Z640 acting as a TrueNAS... NAS, and a Lenovo ThinkStation P330 SFF as a Proxmox host with 16 LXCs and 2 VMs

@jcm @maddy though i'm considering switching Z640 and P330 for a single, more modern box, either on s1200, or sAM4, or s3647

@jcm @maddy well, i kinda thought that two ARM cores would be enough for shrimp.net, but turns out just a single boost of a public post by a moderately popular fedizen is enough for shrimp to go as far as crash on here neocat_melt_sob

well… I got a few OOMKilled back when I was running on less powerful hardware and the pds-worker is kinda going into CrashLoopBackOff often…

oh, and for some time you could crash it by uploading an empty video file :3

@rain @jcm Makes sense. I think I've had the most instability when self-hosting IS.NET.
Largely my fault as it seems to be sensitive to crappy I/O, and I gave that VM a VHD on a pretty worn SSD previously.

@maddy @jcm oh, let me tell you, Wafrn on a slow or a poor drive is horrible, absolutely horrible, it is an I/O monster

when my Wafrn was on a SATA SSD, it was hogging all the I/O ever, and now when it's on QLC NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD (i currently don't have anything better), my drive wearout percentage increases by 1% each 2-7 days

you really need a datacenter setup for hosting Wafrn (though i assume it's the Bluesky portion that makes it like that, and Wafrn can be hosted without one, so maybe on it's own it's not that bad)

@rain @maddy @jcm You certainly don't need any Bluesky integration, and I'd be skeptical of any software that goes out of its way to integrate with Twitter 2, knowing its dubious nature...
